You said a native mobile app is non-negotiable. Of these four engines, only BuddyBoss ships one, and we do not. If that requirement is real, BuddyBoss is your answer whatever else this page says. If the app is a someday idea rather than a launch requirement, change question 2 and read the result again, because it is the single answer that moves this the most.

You asked for a free engine and a native mobile app. No engine on this list gives you both. Decide which constraint is the real one before you shortlist anything.

You are starting without legacy content, you want the bill to stay small, and you want the theme and the engine to come from the same team. The free version covers member profiles, activity feed, groups, messages, notifications. Pro adds advanced moderation, deeper analytics, and priority support. Because we build both, the community pages inherit the Reign design system instead of needing a styling add-on.
Where this pick loses
There is no native iOS or Android app, and we are not going to invent one to win a comparison. It is also the newest engine of the four, which means the third-party add-on pool around it is the smallest. If either of those is a dealbreaker, one of the other three is your answer.
Recommendation
BuddyPress
You already run it, or you want the engine with the longest history and the largest pool of third-party plugins, agencies and documentation. Migrating a working community off BuddyPress to save nothing is a bad trade, so if that is you, stay. Reign has styled BuddyPress for years.
Where this pick loses
Moderation is thin out of the box and usually ends up as a stack of add-ons. There is no native app. And when the theme and the engine disagree, there is no single vendor to call, which is the exact cost you are trading away for the freedom to assemble anything.

BuddyBoss Platform
This is the honest answer when you need a branded app in the App Store and Google Play. BuddyBoss ships a real native app, we do not, and no amount of theme work closes that gap. Their moderation and member management are built into the platform rather than bolted on, which suits a team that is running the community as a job rather than a side project.
Where this pick loses
It is the most expensive route on this page, the app is priced separately on top of the platform and theme bundle, and you are committing to one vendor for the whole stack. If the app is a someday idea rather than a launch requirement, you are paying for it years early.
Recommendation
PeepSo
You already run PeepSo, or you want an engine that sits outside the BuddyPress data model. Reign ships a PeepSo build, so the design layer is covered either way and there is no reason to move a working PeepSo community just to change themes.
Where this pick loses
It is paid, there is no native app, and the ecosystem around it is smaller than BuddyPress. Check that the specific add-ons you are counting on support PeepSo before you commit to it, rather than after.

- Does this tool always recommend your own plugin?
- No. Answer that a native mobile app is a hard requirement and it will send you to BuddyBoss, because BuddyNext does not ship one and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Say you already run BuddyPress or PeepSo with years of content and it will tell you to stay there.
- What does BuddyNext cost?
- Free to install. Pro from $149/yr. The free version covers member profiles, activity feed, groups, messages, notifications. Pro adds advanced moderation, deeper analytics, and priority support.
- Do I have to switch engines to use Reign?
- No. Reign styles BuddyPress, BuddyBoss and PeepSo as well as BuddyNext, and it has done for years. The theme is $99 a year or $249 once for a single site whichever engine you pick.
- Why is there no mobile app option from you?
- Because we do not have one. A native app is a separate product with its own store review, release cycle and support load. BuddyBoss built that; we did not. If the app is the deciding factor, they win this comparison and this page says so.
- I am already on BuddyPress or BuddyBoss. Is there anything here for me?
