Which community engine should you actually run?

BuddyNext, BuddyPress, BuddyBoss Platform or PeepSo. Six questions, one answer, and a plain statement of what that answer costs you. We build BuddyNext, so the one thing worth saying up front is this: if you need a native mobile app, BuddyBoss is the only engine here that has one.

Six questions

The result updates as you answer. Defaults are set to the most common starting point, so you can change only what is different about you.

Question 1 Where are you starting from?
Question 2 Do you need a native mobile app in the app stores?
Question 3 Budget for the engine itself, per year
Question 4 How much moderation do you expect to do?
Question 5 How much do you value one vendor for both theme and engine?
Question 6 How many members do you expect within two years?

The four side by side

Reign styles all four, so the engine choice is about what the software does, not about how the site will look.

Engine Who builds it Cost Native mobile app Best fit
BuddyNextOurs Wbcom Designs, the team that builds Reign Free to install. Pro from $149/yr. No native app Starting fresh, cost-sensitive, wants the theme and the engine from one vendor.
BuddyPress Open source project, third party Free. No native app Already running it, or wants the largest third-party plugin pool.
BuddyBoss Platform BuddyBoss, third party Paid, from $228/yr for the platform and theme bundle. Native iOS and Android app, priced separately Needs a branded app in the app stores, and has the budget for a full vendor stack.
PeepSo PeepSo, third party Paid, priced on their site. No native app Already running PeepSo, or wants an engine outside the BuddyPress data model.

BuddyNext pricing comes from our own store data. Third-party prices are the published starting price at the time of writing and should be confirmed on the vendor site.

Straight answers

Does this tool always recommend your own plugin?
No. Answer that a native mobile app is a hard requirement and it will send you to BuddyBoss, because BuddyNext does not ship one and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Say you already run BuddyPress or PeepSo with years of content and it will tell you to stay there.
What does BuddyNext cost?
Free to install. Pro from $149/yr. The free version covers member profiles, activity feed, groups, messages, notifications. Pro adds advanced moderation, deeper analytics, and priority support.
Do I have to switch engines to use Reign?
No. Reign styles BuddyPress, BuddyBoss and PeepSo as well as BuddyNext, and it has done for years. The theme is $99 a year or $249 once for a single site whichever engine you pick.
Why is there no mobile app option from you?
Because we do not have one. A native app is a separate product with its own store review, release cycle and support load. BuddyBoss built that; we did not. If the app is the deciding factor, they win this comparison and this page says so.
I am already on BuddyPress or BuddyBoss. Is there anything here for me?
Yes. Reign styles that stack too. Keep your engine and add our Pro community plugins in one license. The BuddyPress Community Bundle starts at $249 a year, and you keep the engine your members already know.
Where does the pricing on this page come from?
Our prices come straight from the Wbcom store data this site is built from, so they cannot drift out of date on this page. Third-party prices are the published starting price at the time of writing, and you should confirm them on the vendor site before you buy.
