Real numbers, no hand-waving
How big can my Reign community get?
Concrete answers. From 100 members to 100,000+. Real hosting tiers, real costs, real bottlenecks at each scale. From 2,000+ Wbcom community builds since 2013.
Scale tiers
Five tiers. Pick your row.
Find your member count in the first column. Read across to see what hosting handles it, what it costs, and what breaks first if you under-provision.
Starter
< 500 active · < 5,000 total · < 5 req/sec peak
Real world: Hobby community. Coach with a paid mastermind. Single-niche directory under 500 listings.
Hosting type
Shared WordPress hosting
Bluehost / SiteGround / Hostinger Premium
Hosting cost
$5 - $15 / month
Bottleneck
Hosting is cheap and works. The bottleneck is usually slow PHP on cheap hosts - not Reign.
Growing
500 - 5,000 active · 5,000 - 50,000 total · 5 - 25 req/sec peak
Real world: Paid course community. Mid-size BuddyPress site. Marketplace with 50-200 vendors. Most paid Reign sites land here.
Hosting type
Managed WordPress hosting
Cloudways DigitalOcean 2GB / WP Engine Startup / Kinsta Starter
Hosting cost
$30 - $50 / month
Bottleneck
BuddyPress activity feed gets slow at 10K+ activities - install BuddyPress Activity Cache. Object cache (Redis) becomes worth it.
Established
5,000 - 25,000 active · 50,000 - 250,000 total · 25 - 100 req/sec peak
Real world: Established paid community. National professional network. Marketplace with 500+ vendors. Course platform with 5K+ students.
Hosting type
Managed WordPress (larger tier) or VPS
Cloudways Vultr HF 4GB / WP Engine Growth / Kinsta Pro / managed VPS
Hosting cost
$80 - $200 / month
Bottleneck
Database query optimization matters - WP Search engines like ElasticPress or Algolia replace MySQL search. CDN (Cloudflare) for media + JS/CSS. BuddyPress activity needs cron tuning.
Large
25,000 - 100,000 active · 250,000 - 1M total · 100 - 500 req/sec peak
Real world: Enterprise alumni network. Large association. Marketplace at scale (2K+ vendors). Multi-region paid community.
Hosting type
Enterprise WordPress hosting or dedicated infrastructure
WP Engine Premium / Kinsta Business / Cloudways custom / Pressable / self-managed on AWS / GCP
Hosting cost
$300 - $1,500 / month
Bottleneck
Read replicas on MySQL. Full-page caching at the edge (Cloudflare Workers KV). BuddyPress activity table needs sharding or archiving. Separate media CDN.
Massive
100,000+ active · 1M+ total · 500+ req/sec sustained
Real world: Rare at this scale on WordPress + BuddyPress. Wbcom has shipped a few for enterprise associations + crypto + dating communities.
Hosting type
Custom infrastructure
Multi-region AWS / GCP. Often with custom Worker / CDN layer in front.
Hosting cost
$2,000+ / month
Bottleneck
Stop being a WordPress problem and start being an infrastructure problem. Database sharding, read replicas, edge caching, queue workers for activity write. Reign theme code is not the bottleneck at this scale.
Real communities
Four live communities. Their actual sizes + their actual hosting.
Representative Wbcom client builds. Sizes anonymized for privacy but the stack + hosting + costs are real.
Paid course community
1,200 active members
Stack: Reign + Tutor LMS + BuddyBoss
Hosting: Cloudways DigitalOcean 2GB
Cost: $30/mo hosting
Multi-vendor marketplace
480 vendors, 12K shoppers
Stack: Reign + Dokan + BuddyPress
Hosting: WP Engine Growth
Cost: $115/mo hosting
Professional association
8,400 members
Stack: Reign + BuddyPress + MemberPress
Hosting: Cloudways Vultr HF 4GB
Cost: $80/mo hosting
Mastermind group
180 members
Stack: Reign + BuddyPress + LearnDash
Hosting: SiteGround GoGeek
Cost: $15/mo hosting
Performance questions
FAQ.
Is Reign a WordPress performance bottleneck at scale?
No. The Reign theme adds minimal PHP overhead - it is mostly templates + CSS. At 25,000+ active members the bottleneck is BuddyPress activity table queries + MySQL search + image delivery. Same bottlenecks any WordPress community theme would hit. Reign's code is competitive with any premium community theme at every scale.
What's the biggest Reign community Wbcom has built?
An enterprise alumni network at 47,000 active members on a multi-region AWS setup. Custom CDN layer + database read replicas + BuddyPress activity archiving. The Reign theme handled the front-end without modification at that scale.
Do I need Redis / Memcached object cache?
Strongly recommended past 1,000 active members. Most managed WordPress hosts (Cloudways, WP Engine, Kinsta) include it. Object cache turns most BuddyPress + Reign page loads from 10+ database queries into 1 cached lookup.
When does BuddyPress activity slow down?
The default activity query slows down around 50,000-100,000 activity entries on shared hosting (less on managed). The BuddyPress Activity Cache plugin + a single MySQL index on the bp_activity table fixes 90% of cases. The Wbcom team includes both in the $699 setup package + every kit.
Does Reign support multisite?
Yes. Reign can be network-activated. The 5-site Pro license + the unlimited Agency license both allow multisite. Some add-ons (Dokan multi-vendor, GeoDirectory) need extra configuration in multisite - the Wbcom team helps via the standard support queue.
Can I run Reign + 50K members on a $5/mo shared host?
No. Reign's minimum hosting for a 5K+ member community is a $30-50/mo managed WordPress plan (Cloudways DigitalOcean 2GB, WP Engine Startup, or Kinsta Starter). Shared hosts at $5/mo are designed for a few hundred page views per day, not active community traffic.
Need scale planning?
If you are planning a 10,000+ member Reign launch and want a hosting + caching + database review, the Wbcom team does scale audits via the standard support queue. Email support@wbcomdesigns.com with your projected member count + community shape.
