Community platform cost calculator. 3-year projection.

Enter your members, what you charge, and the plan and share of sales your hosted platform takes. See the three-year total next to a WordPress site on Reign.

Short answer: this calculator is for anyone running or planning a paid community who wants to compare a hosted platform with a WordPress site on Reign. It uses only your own numbers, so nothing here is a quoted price.

3-year cost

Side by side.

How the math works.

WordPress on Reign

Your yearly licences, counted every year, plus your hosting, plus card processing on each paid month. There is no per-member fee and no share of your sales. Pick BuddyNext for a new community; we recommend it for how it is built:

  • Modern front end. Pages respond without full reloads, built on the WordPress Interactivity API.
  • REST-first. Everything members see runs through the REST API, so integrations read and write the same data.
  • Installable web app. Members can add the community to their home screen.
  • Built for large communities. Dedicated database tables with an index for every filter, cursor pagination and background jobs for notifications.

Already on BuddyPress or BuddyBoss? Reign styles those too. See current pricing for the licences that fit.

Your hosted platform

The plan fee you entered, every month for three years, plus the share of sales you entered on every paid month, plus card processing. Some platforms replace card processing with their own fee; if yours does, enter that fee as the share of sales.

The calculator keeps the plan you entered for all three years. If your member count would move you to a bigger plan, run it again with that plan's fee.

An estimate, not a quote. Card processing is counted at a standard card rate, a percentage plus a small fixed fee per payment, on both sides.

How this tool decides

This calculator does not recommend anything. It adds up two bills over three years and shows them side by side. The numbers you enter drive everything, which is why we do not fill in the other platform's prices for you. Plans change often, and each platform has several tiers.

It begins with your active members and the share who pay. Paid members multiplied by your monthly price, over twelve months, gives your yearly revenue. Members then grow each year by the growth rate you enter, so years two and three are larger than year one. Revenue grows with them.

On the hosted side, the bill is the plan fee you entered for every month, plus the share of your sales you entered on every paid month, plus card processing. On the WordPress side, the bill is your yearly licences, plus hosting for every month, plus card processing. Card processing is counted on both sides at a standard rate, so it never decides the result. The tool keeps the plan you entered for all three years and does not move you to a bigger plan as you grow, so run it again with a larger plan's fee if your member count would cross a limit.

Three ways a community platform charges you

The first is a flat licence. You pay the same whether you have ten members or ten thousand. Reign works this way: the theme is a flat licence with no per-member fee and no share of your sales, and our plugins install free with Pro plans bought per plugin when a limit hurts. The part of the bill that grows is hosting, once traffic needs a bigger plan.

The second is a plan that moves with your size. Many hosted platforms sell tiers, and you move up as you pass a member or feature limit. That cost is easy to forget in a calculation, which is why this tool asks you to enter the plan you are on and lets you run it again for the next one.

The third is a share of your sales. Some hosted platforms take a percentage of every payment on top of the plan fee. That grows with every member who pays, so it matters most for communities that earn well. If your platform charges its own processing fee in place of standard card processing, enter that as the share of sales.

What to enter, and how to keep the result honest

Use the plan and the share of sales from the platform's own pricing page, for the plan you use now or the one you are considering. Use your real member count and your real price. If you do not know the share who pay, use a lower guess rather than a higher one, because overestimating revenue exaggerates any share-of-sales fee.

On the WordPress side, start with the Reign licence, then add the Pro plugins you plan to buy. The default fills in the theme licence only. Our plugins install free, so many communities start with nothing else. Look at the pricing page for the plans that fit, and add them to the yearly licences field.

For hosting, use a real quote. Hosting is the cost that scales on WordPress, and a community that grows will outgrow a small plan. The hosting page explains what a community site needs, and the scale page shows how larger communities are run.

What the calculator leaves out

It leaves out your time. A WordPress site takes effort to set up and some each month to look after: updates, backups and fixes. If you do not want that work, a hosted platform handles it for you, and that is worth something. Our team can handle set-up and migration if you prefer to spend your time on members.

It leaves out add-ons on either side, such as a branded mobile app, extra seats or paid integrations. It leaves out discounts and one-off promotions. It also leaves out the value of owning your member list and your content, which is hard to price but is often the reason people move. Treat the result as an estimate and a starting point for a conversation, not a quote.

How to read the result

Look at the shape, not only the total. If the hosted bill grows faster than the WordPress bill from year one to year three, you are paying for growth. If the two are close, other things should decide: the features you need, how much of the work you want to do yourself and how much you value owning the community.

A small or unpaid community may find the hosted plan cheaper at first. That is a fair result. The case for moving usually rests on what you gain, such as pages that search engines can index, a member list you own, and courses, forums and a directory on one login, as much as on price. The migration guides and the comparison pages go through those, and the guide to building an online community covers the wider decision.

FAQ

Common questions.

How do I compare the cost of a WordPress community with a hosted platform like Circle or Mighty Networks?

Enter the plan fee and the share of sales your hosted platform charges today, from its own pricing page. Then enter your WordPress hosting and yearly licences. The calculator grows both over three years with your members, so you see how each one moves as you sell more. Hosted platforms usually add a monthly plan plus a percentage of every sale. On Reign you pay a flat yearly licence and your hosting, with no per-member fee and no share of your sales beyond your payment processor.

Why do I enter the other platform's prices myself?

Plans and fees on hosted platforms change often, and each one has several tiers. Typing the numbers from the plan you are on, or the one you are looking at, gives you a result for your real situation instead of a guess that may be out of date.

Which costs grow as my community grows?

A percentage of sales grows with every member who pays. Some hosted plans also move you up a tier when you pass a member or feature limit. A WordPress site on Reign keeps the same licence as you grow; the part that grows is hosting, once you have enough traffic to need a bigger plan.

What does the calculator leave out?

Plan upgrades as you pass member caps, paid add-ons such as branded apps, and the time you spend running a self-hosted site. Use it as an estimate. If you want a firm number for your community, ask us and we will price your setup.

Is a self-hosted WordPress community always cheaper than a hosted platform?

No. It is cheaper when a hosted platform takes a share of your sales or moves you up a plan as you grow, because your WordPress costs stay roughly flat. For a small or unpaid community, a hosted plan can cost less than hosting plus your time. Enter your real numbers and read the result, not the assumption.

What is the difference between a flat licence, a per-member fee and a share of sales?

A flat licence costs the same whether you have ten members or ten thousand. A per-member fee rises as you add people. A share of sales takes a percentage of every payment you collect. Reign is a flat theme licence with no per-member fee and no share of your sales, so the part of your bill that grows is hosting.

How are paid members and revenue worked out?

The calculator takes your active members, applies the percentage you say pay, and multiplies by your monthly subscription for twelve months. Members then grow each year by the growth rate you enter. It uses those figures for both sides, so the comparison is like for like.

Should I count my own time as a cost?

Yes, if your time has another use. The calculator does not include it. Setting up a WordPress site takes effort once, and running it takes some each month. Our team can do the setup for you if you would rather spend that time on members.

Can I use the calculator if I do not charge members?

Yes. Set paid members to zero. The result then compares the plan fee you pay today with your WordPress licences and hosting, with no sales involved.
