Forum, Q&A, or neither of the two you were shown?

Jetonomy, bbPress, Discourse or BuddyBoss forums. Five questions and one answer, with the trade-off written out rather than hidden. We build Jetonomy, so here is the fact that decides a lot of these: Discourse is not a WordPress plugin, and for a very large standalone forum that is a feature, not a flaw.

Five questions

The result updates as you answer. Question 5 is the one that decides most real cases, because moving existing discussion content is the expensive part of any forum change.

Question 1 What shape are the discussions?
Question 2 Does the forum have to live inside WordPress?
Question 3 How much moderation will this need?
Question 4 Budget for the forum software, per year
Question 5 Do you have existing forum content to move?

The four side by side

Three of these are WordPress plugins and one is not. That single row explains most of the disagreement between forum comparison pages.

Option Where it runs Cost Discussion format Best fit
JetonomyOurs Inside WordPress Free to install. Pro from $69/yr. Spaces, threaded discussions, Q&A with accepted answers, voting. Wants forums and Q&A in the same site, styled by the theme, without buying an add-on.
bbPress Inside WordPress Free. Classic threaded forum. Already has years of bbPress topics and no reason to move them.
Discourse Separate application, hosted or self-hosted Self-host it, or pay for their hosting. Threads, with Q&A style topics. The forum is the product, at large volume, with a real moderation team.
BuddyBoss forums Inside WordPress, inside their platform Bundled with BuddyBoss Platform, from $228/yr for the platform and theme bundle. Threaded forums tied to their member data. Already running BuddyBoss Platform.

Jetonomy pricing comes from our own store data. Third-party prices are the published starting price at the time of writing and should be confirmed on the vendor site.

Straight answers

Is Discourse really not a WordPress plugin?
It is not. Discourse is a separate application written in Ruby that you host yourself or pay Discourse to host. There are bridges for single sign-on and for embedding comments, but the forum lives at its own address, with its own theme and its own upgrade path. Any page that lists it next to bbPress without saying that is being unhelpful.
When is your own plugin the wrong answer?
Three cases, and the tool will tell you all three. If you already have years of bbPress content, the migration usually costs more than you gain. If the forum is the whole product at very large scale, Discourse is built for that. And if you already run BuddyBoss Platform, their forums are already paid for.
What does Jetonomy cost?
Free to install. Pro from $69/yr. Free covers spaces, threaded discussions, q&a with accepted answers, voting. Pro adds moderation queue, reputation, private spaces, and analytics.
Can I run a forum and a Q&A section at the same time?
Jetonomy is one plugin covering both: spaces, threaded discussions, q&a with accepted answers, voting. So a support space can run as Q&A with accepted answers while a general space runs as ordinary threads.
Do I need a Reign add-on to style the forum?
Not for ours. Jetonomy is built by the same team as Reign, so its pages inherit the theme rather than needing a styling add-on. The theme itself is $99 a year or $249 once for a single site.
Where do these prices come from?
Jetonomy pricing is read from our own store data, so it cannot go stale on this page. Third-party prices are the published starting price at the time of writing and should be confirmed on the vendor site.
