One option was ruled out by your answer
You said the forum has to live inside WordPress, so Discourse is out of this result. It is a separate application with its own address, its own theme and its own login, and single sign-on bridges the gap without hiding it. That is worth knowing rather than scoring around.
Weigh the migration before anything else
You have years of bbPress topics. Moving them is the most expensive part of any forum change, and permalinks, attachments and user history all have to survive it. If the current forum works, staying put is a legitimate answer, whatever the rest of this page recommends.
Worth a second look
At heavy, staffed moderation volume, Discourse has the strongest moderation tooling of these four, and it is not close. If your forum is closer to a product than to a section of a website, run the tool again with question 2 set to a separate app and compare the two answers honestly.

Where this pick loses
It is a WordPress plugin, not a standalone forum platform. For a public forum running at very high volume with moderators working shifts, Discourse is built for that job and this is not. And if you already have years of bbPress topics, the migration can easily cost more than everything you gain by moving.

You already have bbPress content and a forum your members know how to use. The cost of a forum change is almost never the licence, it is the migration and the broken links that follow it. If the current forum does the job, keeping it and spending the effort elsewhere is the better trade.
Where this pick loses
It is a classic threaded forum and stays inside those lines: topics and replies, without Q&A accepted answers or voting. Moderation is basic, so busy communities usually end up adding plugins to cover it. Starting from nothing, most of the reasons to choose bbPress are reasons about content you already have.

Discourse
Your forum is the product, not a section of a site, and it has to survive high volume with a real moderation team behind it. Discourse is built for exactly that, and none of the WordPress options here match its moderation tooling at that scale. When the forum carries the community, take the tool that was designed for the job.
Where this pick loses
It runs outside WordPress. Separate address, separate theme, separate upgrades, separate hosting bill, and a login your members will notice even with single sign-on wired up. If the forum needs to look and behave like the rest of your WordPress community, this is the wrong tool no matter how good the software is.

BuddyBoss forums
You already run BuddyBoss Platform, so the forums are already paid for and already wired into the same member data and the same moderation screens. Adding a second forum plugin on top of that is paying twice for one job and giving your members two places to post.
Where this pick loses
It only makes sense from inside their platform. Buying BuddyBoss for the forums alone is an expensive way to get a forum, and it commits you to their stack and their release cycle for everything else on the site too.

- Is Discourse really not a WordPress plugin?
- It is not. Discourse is a separate application written in Ruby that you host yourself or pay Discourse to host. There are bridges for single sign-on and for embedding comments, but the forum lives at its own address, with its own theme and its own upgrade path. Any page that lists it next to bbPress without saying that is being unhelpful.
- When is your own plugin the wrong answer?
- Three cases, and the tool will tell you all three. If you already have years of bbPress content, the migration usually costs more than you gain. If the forum is the whole product at very large scale, Discourse is built for that. And if you already run BuddyBoss Platform, their forums are already paid for.
