Build a LifterLMS course community on WordPress with Reign

If your courses already run on LifterLMS, keep them. Install Reign, add the Reign LifterLMS Addon so the catalog, course and lesson views match the theme, respect your membership levels, and add BuddyNext for the community around the lessons. Starting fresh? Learnomy is the free alternative.

The Reign theme is the only thing you have to buy. See every plugin that installs free, or have us install the whole stack.

Key takeaways

  • Your LifterLMS courses and memberships stay where they are. The Reign LifterLMS Addon only changes how the catalog, course and lesson views look.
  • The addon respects the LifterLMS membership wrapper, so members still see only what their level grants.
  • A Reign demo is built on LifterLMS, so you can import a finished layout with the free Reign Demo Installer.
  • Without an LMS yet? The Learnomy build guide is the free road.

Stack recipe

What you need to assemble.

Buy the theme. Install our plugins free. The third-party engine and its Reign add-on are here for people already running that stack, not a second bill everyone pays.

Build it in 6 steps

From zero to live community.

01

Install Reign and import the LifterLMS demo

Activate Reign and open the free Reign Demo Installer. The demos page lists a Reign LifterLMS BuddyPress demo and a LifterLMS plus BuddyBoss Platform demo. Import the closer one for the home page and menus, then replace its sample courses with yours.

02

Install the Reign LifterLMS Addon

Activate the Reign LifterLMS Addon next to LifterLMS. It applies Reign typography and colour tokens to the catalog, single-course and lesson views. LifterLMS keeps its own licence, settings and data.

03

Test each membership level

Create a test user on each membership level and open the catalog, a course and a lesson as that user. The addon respects the LifterLMS membership wrapper, so each user should see only what their level grants. Check one logged-out visit as well.

04

Add BuddyNext and a space per course

Install BuddyNext and create a space for each course or cohort. Students then talk between lessons on the same login. If you already run BuddyPress or BuddyBoss, keep it; Reign styles those stacks too.

05

Check the lesson views on a phone

Open a lesson on a phone, then a quiz, then the student dashboard. Students read and study on small screens, and a lesson view that is hard to read there costs you completions.

06

Set up engagement emails

Use LifterLMS engagements or your own email tool for a welcome message, a prompt when a student stalls and a note on completion. Keep each message to one action so the sequence is easy to maintain.

What students get from this site

Students see your LifterLMS catalog, course and lesson pages in the same design as the rest of the community. They enrol, work through lessons and, if you use memberships, see only what their level grants. LifterLMS still decides who can open what; the addon changes how it looks.

Around the courses sits the community. With BuddyNext, each student has a profile, a feed, spaces and notifications. A space per course lets them talk between lessons, and messages run through WPMediaVerse. They no longer leave your site to ask a question in someone else's group.

Because LifterLMS data does not move, current students keep their progress. You can switch the styling on in a staging site first, then make the same change on the live site once you are happy.

What to check on staging before going live

Make a staging copy and install the addon there. Walk through the catalog, a course page, a lesson, a quiz and the student dashboard. Then repeat as users on each membership level. The membership wrapper is the part to watch: confirm that a free member cannot open paid content and that a paying member can.

Look for custom CSS left over from a previous theme, because it can fight the addon. Remove the rules the addon now handles. Check the pages at phone width, and check the logged-out catalog, since that is your sales page.

Test a purchase from a clean account from start to finish, including the confirmation email.

Adding the next piece later, on the same login

Most LifterLMS sites add the community first: BuddyNext for profiles, a feed and spaces. Jetonomy then adds Q&A, where a student's question and the accepted answer stay in one place for the next student.

For live cohorts, Eventonomy handles event pages, recurring sessions and RSVPs. MediaVerse lets students share work as photos and video. WB Gamification adds points, badges and leaderboards earned from real activity, and it is free.

Each installs from Plugins, Add New and uses the same accounts as your courses. See the plugins page for the details.

Who this build suits, and who should pick another

This build suits an instructor or business with a working LifterLMS site and memberships, who wants the courses to look and feel like part of a community. Moving a live course catalog costs time and gives students little, so keeping LifterLMS and restyling it is usually the sensible route.

If you have no LMS yet, the Learnomy build guide starts with a free plugin that covers courses, lessons, quizzes, certificates, checkout, memberships and coupons. If you run LearnDash or Tutor LMS, those guides cover the matching add-ons. The LearnMate LifterLMS kit packages the theme and add-on together, and the course community overview compares all four engines.

If your main product is a subscription rather than courses, the membership site build is worth a look too.

Running it day to day

LifterLMS keeps running your enrolment, memberships and lessons the way it did. The new work is the community: answer questions in the course spaces, clear the report queue, and post a short prompt each week that ties to the current lesson.

Read the questions as feedback. A lesson that draws many questions needs a rewrite or a short extra explanation. Pin the best answers at the top of the course space so new students find them first.

On cost, LifterLMS keeps its own licence from its authors, while Reign is a flat theme licence with no per-member fee and no share of your sales. See the pricing page for the add-on and kit options.

Mistakes to avoid when you add a community to LifterLMS

Do not let the community and the membership rules drift apart. If a paid member leaves, or a trial ends, decide what happens to their access to spaces as well as to courses. LifterLMS controls its own content, while BuddyNext spaces have their own visibility. Write down which spaces belong to which level and check each one with a test account, so a lapsed member cannot read a space meant for paying members.

Do not create a space for every course on day one. A space with three members and no posts looks like a closed shop. Start with one shared space for all students and split it when a course has enough people to hold its own conversation. The same applies to the Q&A side: a handful of well-run Jetonomy spaces beat a long list of empty ones.

Do not forget the logged-out visitor. The catalog is where most buyers decide, so it should say what the course teaches, who it is for and what happens after joining. Read it as someone who has never heard of you. If any of those answers is missing, add it before you spend time on anything else.

FAQ

Common questions.

Does Reign work with LifterLMS?

Yes. The Reign LifterLMS Addon styles the catalog, course and lesson views, and there are Reign demos built on LifterLMS. LifterLMS sells its own licence separately.

Does this work with LifterLMS memberships?

Yes. The addon respects the LifterLMS membership wrapper, so members see only the content their level grants access to. Test each level on staging before you go live.

Learnomy, LearnDash or LifterLMS?

If you already run one, keep it, since Reign styles all three. If you are starting fresh, Learnomy starts free and comes from the same team as the theme. The course community overview compares the four engines.

Can I move from LearnDash to LifterLMS?

It is possible but there is no one-click migrator, so expect to rebuild course content and import students. Only do it if a feature you need is missing where you are.

How much does this cost?

Reign is a flat theme licence with no per-member fee and no share of your sales. The Reign LifterLMS Addon and LifterLMS licences are sold separately; the LearnMate LifterLMS kit packages the theme and add-on. See the pricing page.

Ship it

Reign is the only thing you have to buy.

Learnomy and the rest of our plugins install free, and the theme styles them out of the box. Building on LifterLMS instead? The LearnMate LifterLMS kit ships the theme with the matching Reign add-on.
