Reign + Paid Memberships Pro. Membership integration.

Paid Memberships Pro (PMP) is the open-source WordPress membership plugin. Free core, paid add-ons.

Reign + PMP for sites that want membership without the MemberPress license cost - core is free, pay only for add-ons you actually need.

How it works with Reign.

Reign ships a dedicated Paid Memberships Pro stylesheet, so the membership levels, checkout and account pages are styled to the theme rather than left in PMPro's defaults. Of the membership plugins on this site, that makes PMPro the one that looks most at home out of the box. As always, the overlap to watch is the account area: if your community plugin also provides a member dashboard, choose which one owns that route before launch.

When to use it.

Use Paid Memberships Pro when you want a free, open-source membership core with paid add-ons for the parts you actually need, and when a designed membership area matters. It is the membership plugin Reign styles directly. MemberPress is the alternative if you prefer its tooling and documentation and are content for those pages to inherit the theme.

4 steps to ship.

1

Install Paid Memberships Pro (free core).

2

Create membership levels.

3

Add the BuddyPress add-on (free) to map levels to BP groups.

4

Connect Stripe via the Stripe Gateway add-on.

What to check once it is live.

Register as a member and check the levels page, the checkout and the account page while logged in as that member, not as an admin. Confirm restricted content is genuinely restricted in a private window, then cancel and verify access ends. Check the member lands on the dashboard you intended.

Paid Memberships Pro integration questions.

Free version enough?

Yes for simple tiered access. Pro add-ons unlock recurring billing add-ons, advanced level features, BuddyPress integration.

Why does Reign style PMPro specifically?

Because its templates are widely used on community sites and worth designing for. The theme ships a PMPro stylesheet covering the levels, checkout and account pages, so they look like part of the site rather than a default membership form.

Is the free version enough?

For many sites, yes. The core plugin handles levels, checkout and content gating without paying anything, and you add paid add-ons only for specific needs. That model pairs well with our own plugins, which also install free and charge only when one part of the site earns it.

Is the free core genuinely usable?

Yes, and that is unusual enough to say plainly. Levels, checkout and content restriction all work without paying, and you buy add-ons only for specific needs such as a particular gateway or reporting. For a community charging a simple monthly fee, the free core plus a gateway add-on often covers it entirely.

Pick a bundled kit.

The Reign theme is $99/year or $249 lifetime and it is the only required purchase. Kits bundle it with the add-ons that style a third-party stack.
