Infrastructure

Reign + Jetpack. Infrastructure integration.

Jetpack is the official WordPress.com plugin. Backups, security, performance, analytics, social sharing.

Reign plus Jetpack covers the infrastructure jobs a community site would otherwise assemble separately: backups, downtime monitoring, an image CDN and basic security. It is modular, so the right approach is to enable the two or three modules you actually need and leave the rest off rather than treating it as a bundle.

How it works with Reign.

Reign ships no plugin-specific styles for Jetpack, and does not need to: its modules are largely infrastructure, statistics, backups, security and a CDN, which do not render page templates. There is no override layer to maintain and nothing to break when either side updates. The modules to watch are the ones that do output markup, such as related posts and sharing buttons, since those inject into your content area. Enable only the modules you actually use; Jetpack is modular for a reason and leaving everything on is the usual cause of both bloat and surprises.

When to use it.

Use Jetpack for the specific modules you want rather than as a bundle, most often backups, downtime monitoring or the CDN. If your host already provides backups and a CDN, which good managed WordPress hosting does, much of it is duplication and you should check before paying twice.

4 steps to ship.

1

Install Jetpack (free).

2

Connect to a WordPress.com account.

3

Enable Stats, Brute Force Protection, Downtime Monitoring (all free).

4

Pay for Backup ($120/yr) if you want managed off-site backup.

What to check once it is live.

Audit which modules are actually enabled and turn off the ones you are not using, which is usually most of them. Confirm any image CDN is serving correctly rather than breaking on a specific size, and check that Jetpack backups are not duplicating what your host already does.

Jetpack integration questions.

Jetpack vs UpdraftPlus for backups?

Jetpack Backup is real-time + managed. UpdraftPlus is scheduled + DIY. For mission-critical communities, Jetpack Backup is worth the cost.

Will Jetpack slow the site down?

It can if you enable everything, which is the common mistake. Turn on only the modules you use. The image CDN and lazy loading usually help; a dozen unused modules loading assets on every page do not.

Do I need it with managed hosting?

Often not. Good managed WordPress hosting already covers backups, caching and a CDN, so check what you are paying for before adding Jetpack on top. Downtime monitoring and specific modules may still be worth it on their own.

Which modules are worth enabling?

Backups and downtime monitoring if your host does not already provide them, and the image CDN if your site is image-heavy. Leave the rest off unless you have a specific reason. Jetpack is modular precisely so you can do this, and enabling everything is the usual cause of complaints about it.

Pick a bundled kit.

The Reign theme is $99/year or $249 lifetime and it is the only required purchase. Kits bundle it with the add-ons that style a third-party stack.
