When does Slack win?
Your community is synchronous - members talk in real time, files fly back and forth, threads stay active. If chat dies, your community dies. Examples: paid mastermind groups, agency client communities, software product user groups.
When does Reign win?
Your community produces durable content (long-form posts, courses, member portfolios) that SHOULD be searchable. SEO matters. You want member discovery (people finding each other via profiles, location, skills). Examples: course communities, professional networks, paid newsletters with comments.
Can I run Slack + Reign together?
Yes - common pattern. Reign is the public site + course platform + member portfolio. Slack is the private daily chat. Members log in to Reign for everything that should be findable; jump to Slack for real-time discussion.
What about migrating from Slack?
Slack export gives JSON of messages but they are flat (no nice formatting). Most migrators do not import old chat - they start fresh on Reign with the announcement "join us on yourbrand.com" and let Slack go quiet.
